High Five, Gramma!

I haven't told you yet about the very best part of our Disneyland trip. Oh, yes, the weather was wonderful, the smiles were huge, and the rides were a blast - but the very best part was celebrating Gramma!

Five years ago this month the doctors found a giant tumor in Sharon's abdomen and after a very scary surgery diagnosed her with stage 4 ovarian cancer.  And our world came crashing down.

We did the research and read the diagnoses and knew that this was a dire situation.  The five-year survival rate for stage 4 ovarian cancer was a terrifying 25%, and as a breast cancer survivor of 20 years, Sharon knew just how miserable chemo could be.

There was no cure and so little hope.

And in the last 5 years God has simply knocked our socks off with his goodness!  Yes, Sharon's hair has gone and come and gone and come again and gone again.  Yes, being on varying chemo concoctions almost constantly for 5 years has been looooooong and hard for Gramma.  Yes, the Morningstars have forged a very tight bond with the chemo nurses at GMBC :)  It hasn't been easy, but Gramma's faith and good humor haven't wavered.

And in the meantime, the Morningstars have visited 7 continents, welcomed 6 new grandbabies into the family with 2 more on the way, and have demonstrated in word and action to each person blessed to be around them that attitude and gratitude have nothing to do with one's circumstances.

Gramma, we are so very honored to celebrate these 5 years with you. Thanks for showing us the truth of Psalm 119. You are a gift and a treasure to us.
With your very own hands you formed me;
    now breathe your wisdom over me so I can understand you.

When they see me waiting, expecting your Word,
    those who fear you will take heart and be glad.

I can see now, God, that your decisions are right;
    your testing has taught me what's true and right.

Oh, love me—and right now!—hold me tight!
    just the way you promised.

Now comfort me so I can live, really live;
    your revelation is the tune I dance to.

One Year Ago Today

One year ago today a new shared list for the China Waiting Child Program was published and we first locked eyes with this scared and puzzled little girl who would become our daughter.

It's been a year of changes and excitement and growth and lots of love and laughs for each of us and we are so grateful for the diligence of WACAP (our adoption agency) in finding WanYing and walking us through the myriad steps and bureaucracies required to bring us to her, to her fostercare sponsor Laura and her caregivers at the Shangrao Social Welfare Institute
for caring for her physical and emotional needs for her first two years, and to the God who first loved us and gave us the strength and courage and abundant love to pursue WanYing and welcome her home.

It's been such a joy to see those scared and puzzled eyes transform into windows into WanYing's soul that reflect her humor and security and confidence and a whole lot of spunk.

I can't believe that our journey to each other began just one short year ago.  It feels like forever - in all the best ways :)

The Happiest Place on Earth

I know, I know, I can hear you saying it already: But Jamie, haven't you guys already been to Disney, like, twice this year?!? Yeah, yeah, we're visiting with frightening and probably unhealthy regularity... but when each visit prompts smiles like these, well, the draw is irresistable!
Preparing for our 3-D experience
Sasha can't get enough of the thrill rides!
Ice cream, Daddy, and It's a Small World - WanYing heaven
It's a Small World after all
The girl loves her characters!
Of course, she had to give both Chip and Dale big hugs
Mickey Mania
WanYing really warmed up once we got to meet princesses and fairies
Sigh... they're so dang cute!
Getting comfy with a very good-natured Sleeping Beauty
Time for Princess Brunch!  Can't you just feel the anticipation?!?
Sleeping Beauty was kind enough to sign Sasha's Book again
She's coming!  She's coming!
The anticipation is killing me...
...not just Minnie Mouse - it's Princess Minnie Mouse!

And, yes, those of us above the age of four had a marvelous time, too :)
